Friedrich Merz declares end of unconditional US-Europe friendship

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has declared that the era of unconditional transatlantic friendship between the United States and Europe is likely over for the foreseeable future. Speaking to members of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Merz cited a fundamental shift in political attitudes and the assessment of the transatlantic alliance on the American side.

Merz contrasted the current state of relations with the historical era of US presidents like John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. He emphasized that Germany must take more responsibility for its own security, defending increased defense spending and continued support for Ukraine despite domestic economic challenges.

In a recent telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump, both leaders highlighted the special bond between Germans and Americans. The discussion also covered efforts to end the war in Ukraine and trade tensions in the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz.

Additional tensions were noted regarding US policy toward Canada's potential associate membership in the EU, which Trump has met with threats of new tariffs. Furthermore, Trump recently praised the electoral success of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
