Friedrich Merz supports Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy targets
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has expressed support for Ukrainian strikes against Russian energy infrastructure, describing such actions as ‘correct, understandable, and justified’ to disrupt Russia's ability to wage war. Speaking after an EU summit in Brussels, Merz stated that because there is no sign of Russian willingness to end the conflict, these attacks are a necessary means for Ukraine to demonstrate its defensive readiness and force Russia toward negotiations.
Regarding financial support, Merz noted that the European Commission is currently assessing Kyiv's financial requirements ahead of next year's budget deficit. While a 90 billion euro loan has been previously approved, Merz indicated that additional funds may be required, with decisions expected in the coming weeks or by December.
In a separate address in Brussels, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine will require an additional 70 billion euros in financial and military support from European allies by 2027. These funds are intended to bolster drone operations targeting Russian advancements, supply chains, and the wartime economy.
