Friedrich Merz threatens Russia with travel restrictions after asset seizures

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has threatened Russia with consequences following a presidential decree that placed several European companies under temporary state administration. Among the affected entities is the German packaging manufacturer Menshen. In response to these actions, Merz suggested that the European Union could implement restrictions on both business and visitor travel for Russian citizens.

During an EU summit in Brussels, Merz also addressed several other key issues. He expressed opposition to proposals that would transfer control of frozen Russian assets in Europe to Washington, stating that such assets should remain under European decision-making. Additionally, he criticized the European Commission's proposed budget for 2028-2034, which totals nearly two trillion euros, calling for a significant reduction to avoid excessive financial burdens on member states.

Regarding support for Ukraine, Merz noted that the previously agreed 90 billion euro loan for 2026-2027 would be insufficient to meet the country's needs, with further assessments expected in the coming weeks.
