Friedrich Merz urges US to invite South Africa to G20 summit

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is calling on the United States to ensure South Africa's participation in the upcoming G20 summit scheduled for December in Miami. Merz emphasized that both South Africa and the African Union are G20 members and argued that any discussion regarding the future of the global economy must include all major partners.

The demand follows a November 2025 announcement by US President Donald Trump that South Africa would not be invited. Trump cited allegations of genocide against white farmers in South Africa, a claim that the South African government and various experts have firmly rejected.

In addition to the invitation dispute, Merz revealed that the German government has proposed a ‘growth agenda’ to the US for the summit. This proposal focuses on reducing bureaucracy, advancing structural reforms, and promoting investment. Other intended topics for the G20 include artificial intelligence, sustainable energy, unfair trade practices, and global sovereign debt.
