Friedrich Merz visits Korean Demilitarized Zone

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited the inner-Korean border and the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) during his trip to Seoul. While at the demarcation line, Merz expressed hope for the future reunification of the Korean Peninsula, drawing parallels to the German reunification that occurred 36 years ago.

Merz visited the iconic blue barracks that serve as a site for direct talks between North and South Korea. During the visit, he briefly stepped onto the North Korean side of the border within the structure. He noted that the desire for unity is palpable at the border, reflecting the suffering caused by the division that has lasted 73 years since the Korean War.

The peninsula remains divided by a 248 kilometer line along the 38th parallel, separating the democratic South from the authoritarian North led by Kim Jong Un.
