Berlin faces economic warnings amid potential Left-Green-SPD coalition

Berlin is facing significant economic uncertainty as political shifts toward a potential coalition between the Left, Greens, and SPD spark warnings from officials. CDU Finance Senator Stefan Evers and SPD Economic Senator Franziska Giffey have both cautioned that the Left's plans for the socialization of large private housing companies could destabilize the city's finances.

Evers reported that major banks are already becoming more hesitant to provide loans for investment projects in Berlin, particularly within the housing market. He warned that this scarcity of credit could force the city to pay higher risk premiums, further straining the municipal budget. Additionally, housing companies have reportedly signaled that new investments are too risky under the proposed policies, which could lead to a decrease in housing supply and rising rents.

Senator Giffey described the socialization plans as potentially unconstitutional and warned that they could put Berlin's record investment streak at risk. She also noted that the city's budget is under pressure from various fiscal constraints. Meanwhile, political tensions remain high as the city navigates coalition negotiations and internal party debates regarding political responsibility and security.
