Friedrich Merz warns of Russian support for AfD and hybrid threats

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has issued strong warnings regarding European security, asserting that the stability of the continent is directly tied to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Speaking at an event for the Westphalia Peace Prize at NATO, Merz cautioned that if Russia is not contained, its military capabilities will eventually target NATO itself.

Merz specifically accused Moscow of attempting to destabilize Germany by supporting the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. He noted that the AfD, which has seen rising popularity and leads in some polls, advocates for ending military and economic aid to Ukraine and lifting sanctions on Russia. Merz characterized these political shifts and the use of Moscow-controlled social media bots as part of a broader effort to divide Germany.

Furthermore, the Chancellor warned that Germany is preparing for an increase in large-scale hybrid attacks from Russia, including cyberattacks and drone-related incidents. Despite these threats and domestic political pressure, Merz reaffirmed Germany's commitment to supporting Ukraine through the upcoming winter and emphasized the necessity of maintaining a united front within NATO and alongside the United States.
