Friedrich Naumann Foundation awards Freedom Prize to Iranian people
The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, an organization close to the FDP, has decided to award the 2026 Freedom Prize to the Iranian people. While the gesture is intended to show solidarity with those suffering under the Mullah dictatorship, the implementation has sparked controversy.
The Foundation stated that while the award officially belongs to the Iranian people, Reza Pahlavi will accept it as a trustee. Critics argue that this arrangement uses the name of the Iranian people to provide political elevation to a single individual. Concerns have been raised regarding whether Pahlavi can legitimately represent a diverse nation that has not yet had the opportunity to elect representatives through free elections.
