Friedrich Naumann Foundation to award 2026 Freedom Prize to Iran
The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom has announced that its ‘Freedom Award 2026’ will be presented to the people of Iran during a ceremony at the Paulskirche in Frankfurt on November 7, 2026.
According to the foundation, the award is intended for those fighting for democracy, civil rights, and human rights in Iran. Reza Pahlavi is designated to receive the award as a trustee until it can be formally handed over to elected representatives of the Iranian people. The foundation cited Pahlavi’s prominence as an opposition figure as the reason for this arrangement.
Republican institutions have issued an open letter expressing concerns regarding the democratic legitimacy of this selection process. They argue that being a well-known political figure does not equate to democratic representation, noting that Pahlavi has not been elected as a political representative through free and competitive elections. The letter also highlights his lineage as a member of the Pahlavi royal family.
