Friendship Baptist Church destroyed by massive fire in Cleveland

A massive two-alarm fire destroyed the historic Friendship Baptist Church on Cleveland’s East Side early Friday morning. The blaze broke out just before 2 a.m. at the vacant building located near East 55th Street and Central Avenue. Approximately 60 firefighters from 14 companies responded to the scene, battling intense flames that were visible from miles away, including from the Innerbelt Bridge.

The fire caused significant structural damage, including a collapsed roof, blown-out windows, and a crumpled entrance. Officials estimate the loss at approximately $500,000. While no injuries were reported, the building is considered an irreplaceable historic landmark. Built in 1894 and originally known as Temple Tiffereth Israel, the structure was designed by the firm Lehman & Schmitt and later served as a hub for the civil rights movement.

Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire. Although the building was vacant, some reports indicated neighbors had previously expressed concerns regarding unauthorized activity at the property. The area around East 55th Street and Central Avenue remained closed to traffic as crews worked to manage hot spots and debris.
