Authorities at the Friendship Bridge, connecting Brazil and Paraguay, are reporting a significant rise in smuggling activities. In a recent incident, a Paraguayan national was detained by the Receita Federal after officials discovered approximately 94.8 kilograms of a substance resembling marijuana hidden in a false compartment of his vehicle. The driver attempted to flee but was apprehended by federal agents.

Beyond narcotics, there is a surging trend in the smuggling of weight-loss medications. According to the Servicio Federal de Ingresos de Brasil, more than 76,000 items, including pens and vials containing semaglutide and tirzepatide, were seized during the first half of 2026. This figure represents nearly triple the amount seized during the entirety of the previous year.

Federal auditor Flávio Bernardino de Carva noted that these medications have become the second most valuable category of contraband seized in the southern states of Paraná and Santa Catarina, surpassed only by mobile phones. Experts suggest that the high demand for GLP-1 based drugs in Brazil, combined with lower prices in Paraguay, has made this a highly lucrative sector for organized crime.
