Friendship Day origins: US greeting‑card idea, Paraguay movement, UN recognition

The celebration of Friendship Day traces back to 1930 when Hallmark founder Joyce Hall proposed a dedicated day for friends in the United States. The concept gained wider traction in 1958 when Dr. Reman Artemio Bracho of Paraguay organized a World Friendship Crusade, establishing July 30 as the date for the observance. In 2011 the United Nations General Assembly officially declared July 30 International Friendship Day to promote peace and cross‑cultural understanding. In India and several other countries the holiday is popularly observed on the first Sunday of August, a shift driven by weekend convenience and amplified by media, greeting‑card companies and social‑media trends. Today the day is marked by exchanging cards, gifts, friendship bands and online messages, especially among youth.
