Frijoles Fire crew member dies after medical emergency

An incident support crew member died following a medical emergency on Sunday while working on the Frijoles Fire northeast of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Emergency personnel transported the individual to a local hospital, but they did not survive despite medical efforts.

Incident Commander Mike Page expressed condolences, stating, “Our hearts are with the family, friends, coworkers and all those affected by this tragic loss.” The Forest Service has not released the identity of the deceased, and officials have requested privacy for the family.

The wildfire, caused by lightning, has burned approximately 15,200 acres and is roughly 45% to 46% contained. Approximately 913 personnel are currently dedicated to firefighting operations. Due to the tragedy, fire managers canceled a scheduled public meeting in Truchas.

In Santa Fe County, areas including Cundiyo, Cerro Piñon, and Borrego Mesa remain in “Set” status, while Nambe Pueblo Lake is in “Ready” status. Firefighters are working to establish containment lines and assess fire behavior on the eastern side of the blaze.
