Frijoles Fire expands to 6,200 acres, forcing evacuations in New Mexico

The Frijoles Fire has expanded to over 6,200 acres in the Santa Fe National Forest and remains at 0% containment. Caused by a lightning strike, the fire is burning in steep terrain within the Española Ranger District and the Pecos Wilderness.

Evacuations have been ordered for residents in Cundiyo, while nearby areas including Cerro Piñon and Cañon Chimayo remain under “SET” status. Firefighters are focusing suppression efforts on the northern and western flanks of the blaze, utilizing air tankers, chinooks, and helicopters to drop water and retardant.

Crews are also working to establish containment lines and protect structures in Cundiyo, Cañon Chimayo, Cerro Pinon, and the Gorham Boy Scout Ranch. High temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds from thunderstorms have contributed to the fire's active behavior. An air quality alert has been issued for the Santa Fe area, with officials advising residents to limit outdoor exposure.
