Frisco ISD faces scrutiny over exclusive Muslim prayer room
Liberty High School within the Frisco Independent School District (ISD) is under scrutiny following reports that a classroom was being used as an exclusive prayer space for Muslim students. A video posted by the Liberty Muslim Student Association indicated the room was intended solely for Muslim students to pray for two hours a day and was not a social space.
The controversy also involves a planned prayer rug drive where students were told that donating a rug would count as one volunteer hour. This appears to conflict with Frisco ISD academic guidelines, which state that donations of material goods do not qualify for community service hours.
This is not the first time the district has faced similar issues. In 2017, the Texas Attorney General’s office sent a letter to the Frisco ISD Superintendent regarding reports of a classroom being used as a prayer room that appeared to exclude students of other faiths, citing potential First Amendment concerns.
