Fritz Lang’s ‘M – Il mostro di Düsseldorf’ returns to Italian cinemas
Fritz Lang’s 1931 cinematic masterpiece, ‘M – Il mostro di Düsseldorf’, is returning to Italian theaters on September 14 in a newly restored version. The film, which features an iconic performance by Peter Lorre, is recognized as a foundational work in cinema history and Lang’s first sound film.
The restoration was led by the Deutsche Kinemathek and carried out at the L’Immagine Ritrovata, Haghefilm, and Henderson laboratories. The release is being promoted by the Cineteca di Bologna as part of the ‘Il Cinema Ritrovato’ project, which aims to recover and value classic films.
Set in 1930s Germany, the thriller follows the hunt for Hans Beckert, a compulsive killer. The film is noted for its innovative use of sound, including the use of silence and specific acoustic cues to build tension, and its depiction of a society gripped by collective hysteria.
