Friuli Venezia Giulia launches DNA protocol to identify 13 unknown bodies

A regional protocol was signed in Trieste to improve the identification of unidentified corpses in Friuli Venezia Giulia. The agreement, signed by the Prefectures, the Prosecutor's Office, the regional government, the Universities of Trieste and Udine and the Municipality of Trieste, creates a coordinated process for collecting biological samples from the 13 bodies that remain nameless in the region and comparing the DNA profiles with the national DNA database.

The protocol, pending a national law, defines the steps for forensic teams, police scientists and medical examiners to take samples, perform genetic profiling and cross‑check results with data supplied by families of missing persons. Officials highlighted its importance: Prefect Giuseppe Petronzi, Commissioner Saverio Ordine and Regional Health Assessor Riccardo Riccardi all stressed that the new tool can bring certainty to grieving families and accelerate the resolution of long‑standing cases.
