Cal Foote contract terminated by Swedish club Färjestad BK after fan backlash
Swedish Hockey League team Färjestad BK announced on July 30, 2026 that it had terminated the one‑year contract of 27‑year‑old defenseman Cal Foote only two days after signing him. The decision followed extensive criticism from supporters, sponsors, local politicians and other stakeholders. The club said it had initially conducted a thorough review of Foote’s background, but recent developments changed its overall assessment, making it impossible to provide the focus required for the player and the team.
Foote was one of five members of Canada’s 2018 World Junior squad who were charged with sexual assault in connection with an alleged incident in London, Ontario. All five were acquitted in July 2025. Despite the acquittal, the controversy prompted the backlash that led to the contract’s cancellation. Foote has played 145 NHL games, won the Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2021, and most recently appeared for the AHL’s Chicago Wolves, recording four goals and 18 points in 48 games.
