Färjestad BK cancels Cal Foote contract after public backlash
Swedish Hockey League club Färjestad BK terminated the one‑year contract of defenseman Cal Foote just two days after signing him. The decision came after intense criticism from supporters, sponsors, and local politicians in Karlstad, who raised concerns over Foote’s involvement in the Hockey Canada sexual‑assault scandal.
Foote was among five members of Canada’s 2018 World Junior team charged with alleged sexual assault in a London, Ontario hotel room in 2018. All were acquitted in July 2025 due to insufficient evidence, but the controversy persisted. Färjestad BK stated that recent “overall perception and assessment” of the player made it impossible to maintain focus on team performance, prompting the club to end the partnership.
The club emphasized its responsibility to its community and expressed hope to move forward toward the upcoming season. Foote, a former first‑round NHL draft pick, is now a free agent.
