Frogwares releases The Sinking City 2 as survival horror

Ukrainian developer Frogwares has released The Sinking City 2 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. The sequel marks a significant genre shift from the original's open-world detective adventure to a more linear, chapter-based survival horror experience.

Set in a 1920s Lovecraftian version of Arkham, the story follows occult adventurer Calvin Rafferty as he attempts to save his partner, Faye Bennett, from a supernatural coma. Players must navigate a flooded, decaying city while managing limited resources and fighting eldritch creatures known as the Slither.

Early critical reception has been largely positive, with the game holding a 79 on Metacritic and an 81 on OpenCritic. Reviewers have praised the dense atmosphere, improved combat, and the successful reinvention of the series, though some have noted criticisms regarding the combat system and dialogue. The development of the title was noted to have occurred under challenging circumstances due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
