Frombork Cathedral archaeologists search crypt for historical burials

Archaeologists and researchers from the Nicolaus Copernicus Foundation are conducting excavations in the canons' crypt of the Frombork Cathedral in Poland. The primary objective is to locate the remains of Bishop Łukasz Watzenrode, uncle of astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, along with other 16th-century bishops.

Recent investigations in the crypt have yielded significant historical finds, including Poland’s largest discovered collection of silk chasubles and unique liturgical garments. Researchers also recovered various religious items such as rosaries, reliquary crosses, and chalices made from wood, leather, and paper, the latter of which are exceptionally rare.
