Frome Community College principal faces parent backlash over 25 suspensions

Parents at Frome Community College in Somerset have expressed outrage after the school's new interim principal, Dan Jeffries, suspended 25 pupils during the first week of the new term.

Parents have criticized the school's disciplinary approach, comparing the environment to a ‘military base’. Allegations from parents include students being suspended for ‘zipping their bag too loudly’, ‘looking out of a window’, ‘being a minute late’, and ‘nervously laughing’. One parent noted that her daughter, who has special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), was suspended for nervous laughter caused by the stress of a new environment.

Dan Jeffries defended the actions, stating the suspensions were for ‘persistent disruption’ and that high behavioral standards are intended to prepare students for successful futures. He dismissed claims that students were suspended for lateness, asserting that unpunctuality only results in detentions, and denied that minor dress code issues led to suspensions. He also noted that he has received no formal complaints from parents.
