Frontex reports 35% decline in irregular EU border crossings
Frontex reports a 35 percent decrease in irregular border crossings at the European Union's external borders during the first eight months of the year, with over 74,000 unauthorized entries recorded. EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner noted that illegal crossings have been steadily declining for 14 months, attributing the trend to enhanced cooperation with partner nations and preventive measures in countries of origin.
However, the agency acknowledged that these figures do not capture the large-scale migration movement toward the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in late July. During that event, the Spanish government reported approximately 80,000 people temporarily entered the enclave, while Moroccan authorities estimated the number at 40,000. At least 83 people died during attempts to reach Ceuta. The incident has reignited debates regarding EU border protection and Spain's responsibilities.
In response to shifting migration dynamics, the European Commission is expected to propose a revision of Frontex regulations in October. The proposal, potentially presented by Ursula von der Leyen, aims to expand the agency's mandate, increase its permanent staff to 30,000, and enhance its role in combating cross-border crime and managing migrant returns.
