FRSC and stakeholders launch campaign to end vehicle overloading in Nigeria

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and various transportation stakeholders have launched a national campaign to eliminate vehicle overloading in Nigeria. During a National Breakfast Policy Dialogue in Abuja, stakeholders adopted the ‘Abuja Declaration 2026’, committing to coordinated actions to promote safer road transportation.

FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed emphasized that overloading is a multifaceted crisis affecting road safety, infrastructure, logistics, and economic productivity. He noted that excessive loads compromise vehicle stability, braking, and steering, while accelerating the deterioration of road networks. The Corps Marshal also warned against improper cargo distribution and the dangerous practice of mixing passengers with goods.

Stakeholders have called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to issue a decisive national declaration to end overloading, comparing the necessary political will to the administration’s recent decision to end the petrol subsidy regime. The movement aims to address risks in the haulage and logistics sectors, where the pressure to maximize commercial benefits often leads to unsafe loading practices.
