FRSC urges emergency planning for Niger Bridge project

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is calling for enhanced emergency and traffic management plans regarding the upcoming Niger Bridge demarcation project. ACM Cyril Matthew, the RS5 Zonal Commanding Officer, warned that the project could create significant traffic vulnerabilities, noting that reliance on a single bridge could hinder emergency teams and recovery operators if accidents or breakdowns occur. The FRSC is currently engaging the Federal Ministry of Works to ensure that engineering and traffic plans account for the movement of heavy recovery equipment, some of which weighs approximately 70 tonnes.

In a separate effort to bolster national road safety, the FRSC has deployed over 170 ambulances across Nigeria to strengthen rescue operations. Corps Public Education Officer Osondu Ohaeri stated that the agency maintains one of the largest ambulance networks among Nigerian emergency responders, supported by 60 Zebra points. While the agency aims for rapid response times, officials noted that actual serviceability and response speeds depend on vehicle condition, location, and traffic congestion.
