Försäkringskassan employees face disciplinary action over AI data breach

Two employees at the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan) have been reported to the agency's disciplinary board (Personalansvarsnämnden) following the mishandling of sensitive information. The incidents, occurring in February and April, involved staff members using Google Translate to translate client certificates and medical records without first removing personal or confidential data.

By inputting unredacted information into the public AI translation service, the employees effectively exposed protected data. The agency noted that such actions violate internal guidelines and could potentially lead to criminal charges, including fines or imprisonment, under the Swedish Penal Code for disclosing confidential information. The disciplinary board will now assess the severity of these cases.
