Fruit and Drain Flies: Identification and Prevention Tips

Fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) and drain flies are common household pests attracted to moisture and decaying organic matter. Fruit flies breed in overripe fruit, fermenting liquids, garbage disposals, recycling bins, houseplant soil, damp sponges, and leaky faucets. Drain flies, also called moth flies or sewer gnats, favor kitchen and bathroom drains, sewage systems, standing water, and damp areas under appliances, where they feed on bacteria and organic film.

Key differences include appearance—drain flies have fuzzy, moth‑like wings and erratic flight, while fruit flies are small, brown‑yellow with red eyes and more direct flight. Effective control involves eliminating breeding sites: thoroughly clean drains and garbage disposals, repair leaks, keep surfaces dry, store produce in sealed containers, dispose of rotting food, and manage houseplant watering. When infestations persist, professional pest control may be required.
