Fruit consumption and blood sugar management

Common social media advice suggesting that fruit should never be eaten alone—but always paired with yogurt or nuts to prevent blood sugar spikes—is being challenged. Experts note that while pairing foods can affect glycemic response, no food can entirely cancel out the carbohydrates of another.

For individuals managing diabetes, the total quantity of fruit consumed is more significant than whether it is paired with other foods. A single apple versus three apples creates a much larger impact on glucose levels than the addition of yogurt.

Clinical guidelines for prediabetes and diabetes recommend including whole fruit as a source of unprocessed carbohydrates and nutrients rather than avoiding it. A 12-week randomized study found that restricting fruit intake in recently diagnosed individuals did not result in improvements in glycated hemoglobin, weight, or waist circumference compared to those who ate fruit freely.
