Fruit flies can thrive in drains and be controlled with DIY traps

Fruit flies, scientifically known as Drosophila melanogaster, can thrive in household drains by utilizing moisture and decaying organic matter as breeding grounds. Because of their rapid life cycle and ability to breed prolifically, they can become a persistent nuisance in kitchens and food preparation areas.

To combat infestations, DIY traps using common household items have proven effective. A highly successful method involves combining warm apple cider vinegar with a few drops of liquid dish soap in a bowl covered with plastic wrap containing small holes. The vinegar acts as a lure, while the soap breaks the liquid's surface tension to prevent flies from escaping. Alternatively, mashed overripe fruit mixed with water and a single drop of dish soap can serve as a zero-cost trap when vinegar is unavailable.
