Fruit fly outbreak threatens avocado farms in Monte Patria and Matilla, Chile

The fruit fly pest has forced the removal of about 40,000 kilograms of avocados in Monte Patria, affecting roughly 60 local producers. The Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) reports that 950,000 kilograms of fruit have been taken from trees within a 200‑metre radius of detected sites, with about 480 staff conducting field operations and permanent road checks. The agency expects sanitary controls to continue until at least January 2027 and offers insurance compensation to growers who discard more than 200 kilograms, though many say the payments do not cover market value.

In the nearby town of Matilla, deputy Carlos Carvajal visited farmers to deliver SAG’s latest findings and pledge continued assistance. He highlighted the urgency of the situation for families dependent on fruit cultivation, promised to monitor the response, and called for clearer coordination among SAG, regional authorities and the agricultural community.
