Fruit grower in Kortenaken faces hail and drought damage

Fruit grower Bert Morren of Fruitbedrijf Morren in Kortenaken reports challenging conditions for the start of the new hard fruit season. Persistent drought and recent hail have significantly impacted crop quality and size.

The Sissired summer apple variety has been hit particularly hard by hail, with Morren estimating that approximately 50 percent of the fruit has suffered significant damage, likely resulting in lower-grade produce at auction.

Additionally, the Conference pear variety is expected to be smaller than usual due to ongoing dry conditions. While the pear trees are more plentiful than last year, the lack of significant rainfall and the threat of upcoming hot weather and sunscald remain major concerns. The Conference pear harvest is anticipated to begin around August 19.
