Fruit harvests in Germany face shortages due to weather

Fruit harvests in parts of Germany are facing challenges due to an extremely hot and dry summer, combined with regional hailstorms. In the Enzkreis district, orchard fruit is reported to be smaller and less juicy than in previous years, making it difficult to gather the quantities of apples and pears typically used for juice and distillate production.

To address the shortage, the Enzkreis district administration provides a free online platform called the 'Streuobstwiesenbörse' to connect orchard owners with those seeking fruit for consumption or processing. Meanwhile, in the Schwandorf district, eight horticultural associations are preparing for the apple juice season in September and October, despite issues with drought, hail, and pests.

Experts advise that only flavorful apples without rot should be used for pressing and recommend tasting fruit directly from the tree before harvesting.
