Fruit tree protection: Managing wildlife, insects, and hornets

Fruit trees in gardens face various threats from wildlife, insects, and improper cultivation practices. Forest animals, such as deer and hares, can cause fatal damage to young saplings by gnawing on the bark, which disrupts nutrient flow. Effective protection includes using mesh guards around trunks, applying grafting wax to wounds, and installing fences.

Insects and hornets also pose significant challenges. Hornets are particularly attracted to sap leaking from wounded branches, sweet juices, and overripe fruit like apples, pears, and plums. Leaving fallen fruit on the ground can create a sugar source that draws hornets closer to homes. To minimize these risks, gardeners are advised to regularly collect fallen fruit, monitor branches for sap leaks, and check dark areas like sheds or undercrofts for potential nesting sites.
