Frutas Cachi wins national sustainability award in Spain
Frutas Cachi, a fruit shop located in the Central Market of Alicante, has been awarded the METRAE 2026 prize for the best individual sustainability project. The award was presented during the VI Meeting of Traditional Markets held in Palma de Mallorca, organized by the Confederation of Traditional Supply Markets of Spain.
The recognition honors owner Paco Alemañ for his commitment to reducing environmental impact. Key practices include the elimination of unnecessary plastic packaging and bags, the use of reusable or compostable materials, and the daily adjustment of orders to prevent food waste. Additionally, the business implements responsible measures for unsold produce through donations or repurposing.
Lidia López, the Councilor for Markets in Alicante, attended the event and highlighted the award as a national example of responsibility regarding food waste and waste reduction. The meeting, themed ‘Markets: Heart of the Neighborhood, Soul of the City,’ also featured discussions on modernizing traditional markets to attract new generations of consumers.
