Fryslân islands receive awards as museum honors local artist
The Fryslân region and its Wadden Sea islands have received international recognition for their quality and sustainability. During the WadNext Conference on Ameland, the islands of Ameland, Vlieland, and Terschelling were awarded the gold Green Destinations QualityCoast Award. Schiermonnikoog received a platinum award. These accolades were based on 75 criteria, including nature, cultural heritage, livability, and governance.
In cultural news, Museum Panorama Mesdag in The Hague is hosting a major exhibition dedicated to Betzy Akersloot-Berg. The artist, who lived on Vlieland starting in 1896, was known for her paintings of the sea, clouds, and coastal landscapes. The museum aims to revitalize her reputation, noting her historical connections to artists Hendrik Willem Mesdag and Sientje Mesdag-van Houten. Residents of Vlieland can visit the exhibition for free through February 28 by presenting their boat card.
