FS Logistix integrates biotope into Milano Smistamento terminal

FS Logistix has integrated a natural biotope into the construction of the new Milano Smistamento intermodal terminal. The project, being developed by TerAlp—a company owned by FS Logistix with participation from Hupac—aims to promote biodiversity and environmental value within logistics infrastructure.

The biotope is designed to act as an environmental connection in a highly developed area, providing habitats for fauna and improving landscape permeability. It also offers ecosystem services such as natural rainwater regulation through phytodepuration, support for pollinators, and increased climate change resilience.

In collaboration with the Department of Environmental and Earth Sciences at the University of Milano-Bicocca, the site functions as a permanent ecological laboratory. It utilizes bioacoustic sensors powered by photovoltaic panels to monitor birds and bats, bee-hotels for wild bees, and camera traps to observe insects, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals. Initial monitoring has already identified 126 different animal species.
