FS Logistix orders eight Stadler locomotives for Italian rail freight

FS Logistix, through its subsidiary Mercitalia Shunting & Terminal, has ordered eight Stadler EUROLIGHT Dual bi-mode locomotives to modernize Italy’s rail freight services. The order aims to increase operational efficiency, flexibility, and sustainability across the national rail network.

Designed specifically for the Italian market, these locomotives combine 3 kV DC electric traction with a Stage V diesel engine. This configuration allows for seamless operation on both electrified and non-electrified lines, eliminating the need for locomotive changes and improving service continuity. The lightweight Bo’Bo’ models feature an axle load of 20 tonnes, making them suitable for both major corridors and secondary lines.

The locomotives are equipped with ETCS B3R2, SCMT, and SSC safety systems to ensure full compatibility with Italian infrastructure. To support sustainability goals, the EUROLIGHT Dual utilizes electric power whenever overhead lines are available to reduce emissions and noise, and employs regenerative braking to return energy to the electrical network.
