FSSAI intensifies crackdown on food safety and labeling violations in India

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched a widespread enforcement campaign targeting labeling inaccuracies, hygiene violations, and food adulteration across various sectors.

In the alcohol industry, FSSAI warned Diageo that claims regarding the maturation of Royal Challenge Whisky in American oak casks were misleading, as much of the product consists of non-matured spirit. The regulator also prohibited sales of several Diageo and Inbrew brands due to the use of artificial flavoring instead of proper aging. Manufacturers of Old Monk and McDowell's No. 1 have challenged these prohibition orders in the Bombay High Court.

In the food sector, FSSAI directed PIE Foods to cease sales of monk fruit sweetener products due to licensing and labeling violations. Additionally, the licenses of VKC Nuts and Chheda Specialities were suspended following inspections that revealed severe hygiene failures, including pest infestations and mold.

Regional enforcement in Maharashtra saw the FDA seize adulterated cooking oil worth Rs 1.93 crore in Beed district and impose a ban on unstandardized analogue paneer. Meanwhile, the Bombay High Court reprimanded the Maharashtra FDA for its decision to cancel Amazon Retail India's food license, characterizing the move as excessive.
