FSSAI develops AI tool to detect food safety violations online

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is testing an artificial intelligence-based system designed to automatically flag food safety violations on e-commerce platforms. Developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the tool aims to increase oversight of online food sales, dark stores, and cloud kitchens.

FSSAI CEO Rajit Punhani stated that the system will initially focus on e-commerce platforms where violations are easier to detect. The regulator has emphasized that e-commerce companies are held accountable for the products sold on their platforms and must ensure that physical product label information is accurately displayed online.

Additionally, state authorities are intensifying risk-based inspections of dark stores and cloud kitchens, focusing on cleanliness and cold-chain requirements. High-risk products, including dairy, meat, eggs, poultry, spices, and honey, are subject to more frequent inspections.
