FSSAI initiates legal action against multiple food companies for safety violations

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched multiple enforcement actions against various food businesses for serious safety violations and regulatory non-compliance.

Legal proceedings for prosecution have been initiated against Surya Food & Agro Ltd, the manufacturer of Priyagold biscuits, after inspections revealed the use of cattle feed bran as a fiber source in biscuits. The company's license was previously suspended due to hygiene and storage deficiencies. Additionally, FSSAI is pursuing legal action against Dodla Dairy Ltd following findings that a sample of full cream milk was unsafe due to the presence of detergent or caustic soda and substandard fat content. UEIR Organic Foods Pvt Ltd also faces prosecution after laboratory analysis detected pesticide residues in yellow raisins.

In a separate matter, FSSAI issued notices to multinational companies Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) and Nestle India regarding alleged misleading health claims on products such as Horlicks Mother’s Plus Kesar and Nestle Resource Renal. The regulator also suspended the license of Bala Ji Food Products.

Furthermore, FSSAI issued an advisory to all food business operators mandating strict temperature controls during the handling, storage, and transportation of perishable goods like meat, fish, paneer, and khoa to prevent microbial growth and spoilage.
