China tech valuations surge amid AI and semiconductor race

China is experiencing a surge in technology sector valuations driven by a rapid expansion in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and robotics. The Star 50 index, representing major tech companies on the Shanghai exchange, has gained approximately 29% this year, contrasting with the 0.9% growth of the CSI 300.

Market valuations for these sectors are reaching exceptional levels. The price-to-earnings ratio for the Star 50 has exceeded 150 times, significantly higher than the approximately 35 times seen for the Nasdaq 100. This trend reflects investor confidence in Beijing’s strategy to reduce dependence on foreign technology and compete directly with the United States.

Key developments include the launch of Moonshot’s Kimi K3, a major AI model, and the rise of chipmaker CXMT, which has become one of the country’s most valuable companies. This shift comes as investors seek alternatives to the struggling Chinese real estate market, betting on the country's ability to close the technological gap with the West.
