FTSE Russell to announce Vietnamese stocks for GEIS index
FTSE Russell is expected to announce the list of Vietnamese stocks meeting the criteria for the FTSE GEIS index on August 21. This announcement serves as a critical step toward Vietnam’s official transition from a frontier market to a secondary emerging market, scheduled for September 21, 2026.
To mitigate liquidity shocks, the State Securities Commission of Vietnam plans to implement the inclusion of Vietnamese stocks into FTSE indices in four stages. The process will begin on September 21, with an initial weight of 10%, increasing to 30% by March 2027, 65% by June 2027, and reaching 100% by September 2027.
In conjunction with the market upgrade, efforts to reduce capital costs are underway. The State Bank of Vietnam and various commercial banks, including the Big 4 group, have introduced preferential credit packages targeting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and priority sectors such as agriculture, exports, and the green economy. While corporate profits showed growth in the first half of 2026, experts suggest market recovery may be uneven due to high margin pressure and localized cash decreases.
