FTX collapse and Netflix series ‘The Altruists’ spark controversy

The 2022 collapse of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX, which resulted in billions of dollars in investor losses, remains a focal point of scrutiny. Former FTX Chief Operating Officer Constance Wang has criticized a new Netflix series titled ‘The Altruists,’ which portrays the downfall of Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison as a ‘toxic love story.’

Wang described the romanticized narrative as ‘laughable,’ stating that Bankman-Fried’s primary focus was on global impact rather than personal relationships. She noted that many employees were unaware the pair were dating at the time. Wang, who is depicted in the series, expressed significant discomfort with the show’s portrayal of the events.

The FTX implosion also highlighted systemic vulnerabilities within centralized cryptocurrency exchanges, including opaque financial practices and the commingling of customer funds. The event has prompted a broader industry re-evaluation of the custodial model and the risks associated with concentrated power in digital asset platforms.
