Fu Yi-yao holds first Taiwan solo exhibition at National Museum of History
The “East Resonance · Common Rhyme — Fu Yi-yao Taiwan-Japan Art Exchange Exhibition” is currently being held at the National Museum of History in Taipei, running through November 22. This marks the first time the renowned ink wash artist, who has spent much of her career in Japan, has held a solo exhibition at a national-level public museum in Taiwan.
The exhibition features a significant collection of Buddhist-themed works, including ten new pieces completed in early 2026 at her studio in Tokyo. These works represent a spiritual and technical fusion of traditional Chinese ink wash and Japanese painting styles.
Fu Yi-yao has achieved rare distinction in Japan, having been commissioned to create large-scale screen paintings (byōbu) for prestigious temples such as Enryaku-ji, Eihei-ji, and Sanzen-in. As a non-Japanese female artist, her inclusion in the tradition of Japanese temple art is noted by experts as a significant historical and artistic milestone.
