Fucino irrigation season ends as Consortium seeks infrastructure upgrades
The 2026 irrigation season in the Fucino Plain is approaching its conclusion. Due to improved weather conditions and rising water levels in the channels, the Consorzio di Bonifica Ovest has requested that signatory municipalities consider lifting the irrigation freeze for the final weekend.
Giancarlo Annibale Di Pasquale, President of the Consortium, expressed gratitude to local mayors, agricultural organizations, and technical staff for their cooperation in managing a challenging season. However, he highlighted a recurring systemic issue: for the third consecutive year, the period between July 20 and August 10 has seen peak water demand that exceeds current infrastructure capacity.
To address these seasonal shortages, the Consortium is calling on the Abruzzo Region for support. They have prepared various project proposals aimed at increasing the capacity of the irrigation system to ensure the agricultural territory is less vulnerable to extreme demand peaks in future years.
