Fudan University study links parental Vitamin-B12 to lower birth defect risk
A study conducted by Fudan University in China indicates that the Vitamin-B12 levels of both parents prior to conception play a significant role in reducing the risk of newborn malformations.
Research findings show that for mothers, the risk of birth defects decreases consistently as Vitamin-B12 levels increase across the entire measured range. For fathers, the risk decreases significantly as levels rise but stabilizes once a moderately high level is achieved, meaning further increases offer minimal additional benefit.
The study suggests that nutritional preparation for pregnancy should focus on both parents, as paternal Vitamin-B12 deficiency is a factor that has been overlooked in previous prevention strategies.
