Fuel contamination risks during gas station tanker deliveries

Drivers are advised to avoid refueling at gas stations while fuel tankers are actively discharging into underground storage tanks. During the delivery process, the high pressure of the incoming fuel acts like a hydraulic mixer, stirring up accumulated sediment at the bottom of the tanks.

These sediments typically consist of rust particles, dust, biological sludge from biofuels, and condensed water. While these contaminants usually remain settled at the bottom, the turbulence from a tanker delivery can suspend them in the fuel. Because modern vehicle fuel systems, including high-pressure pumps and injectors, are extremely sensitive, even microscopic particles or water droplets can bypass station filters.

Contamination can lead to engine malfunctions, reduced performance, or total engine failure, with repair costs estimated between 1,500 and 4,000 euros. Experts recommend waiting at least 45 to 60 minutes after a delivery is completed to allow gravity to settle the sediment back to the bottom of the tank before refueling.
