Fuel costs and shrinking distribution networks pressure Italian businesses

Italian business associations are raising alarms over the economic impact of rising fuel costs and the shrinking availability of fuel distribution networks.

Fnaarc, the national federation of commercial agents, has stated that government measures to contain fuel costs are insufficient. The federation argues that temporary interventions do not provide the stability required for professionals whose work relies on continuous travel. They are calling for structural corrections to compensate for market volatility rather than emergency-based management.

In the Basilicata region, Confartigianato reports a critical reduction in the fuel distributor network, particularly in mountainous and low-density areas. Out of 267 active plants, 32 municipalities are already without a distributor, and another ten facilities face potential closure due to high management costs and low profitability. Officials warn that the loss of these stations threatens local mobility and social cohesion in areas where cars are the primary means of transport.
