Italy fuel costs projected to rise by 13.6 billion euros in 2026

Estimates from the CGIA study office indicate that rising fuel costs could impact Italian households and businesses by over 1.1 billion euros per month in 2026, totaling approximately 13.6 billion euros for the year. This represents a 20.4% increase compared to 2025 levels, assuming consumption remains constant.

Regional impacts vary across Italy, with the Southern regions facing higher percentage increases. Basilicata is projected to see a 21.6% rise, followed by Campania and Puglia at 21.3%. In Abruzzo, the cost increase is estimated at 352 million euros, a 20.9% rise.

Consumer group Codacons reported that the August holiday period is already experiencing a significant financial burden, estimating an extra 370 million euros in spending for travelers compared to the previous summer. Diesel prices have seen a notable increase of 26.7%, while gasoline has risen by 16.2%.

While the Italian government has allocated over 2.35 billion euros for excise duty cuts, analysts suggest these measures may only offset a small fraction of the overall price increases. The government is currently seeking to engage with the European Commission to activate safeguard clauses regarding energy spending to mitigate these economic pressures.
