Fuel efficiency and vehicle costs impact driver spending
Rising fuel prices are impacting car ownership economics, leading to a focus on fuel-efficient vehicles. A study by automotive research platform Rerev identifies the Mitsubishi Mirage as the least expensive car to fuel, with an estimated annual petrol expenditure of US$1,577. Other economical options include the Hyundai Accent, which has an estimated annual fuel cost of US$1,708.
In terms of green technology, an analysis conducted with the Union of Concerned Scientists indicates that battery electric vehicles are the cleanest and least expensive to operate, though range and initial cost remain factors for many consumers. While electric vehicles offer the highest environmental benefits, switching to more efficient gasoline vehicles can also provide significant reductions in emissions and petroleum use.
