Fuel price debates intensify in Denmark and Norway

In Denmark, the political party Venstre has proposed reducing gasoline and diesel taxes to the EU minimum levels for the remainder of 2026. This proposal aims to alleviate the economic pressure on Danish households caused by rising fuel prices linked to instability in the Middle East. If implemented, gasoline prices would drop by more than 2.50 DKK per liter, and diesel by approximately 1.80 DKK per liter, a move estimated to cost 3.5 billion DKK.

In Norway, recent data from Statistics Norway shows that while fuel prices reached a peak in July, the relative cost of gasoline remains lower than in 2006 when adjusted for purchasing power. An analysis by Nordea suggests that due to wage growth, Norwegians can currently purchase more fuel per month's average salary than they could two decades ago. Analysts have noted a discrepancy in public concern, observing that fuel price fluctuations often draw more political attention than rising food prices, despite fuel consuming a smaller portion of household budgets than in previous years.
